Are you considering adoption or curious about becoming a parent to a child or teen through adoption?

This four-part recorded information session explores adoption from BC government care. The videos will help you better understand what adoption involves and introduce important considerations as you decide whether it may be the right fit for you.

Part 1: What is adoption from foster care?

The first video introduces adoption from BC foster care and how it differs from foster care. It covers:

Who can apply to adopt through the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD)
Qualities social workers look for in prospective adoptive parents
The roles of MCFD, the Belonging Network, and BC’s private adoption agencies
Costs associated with different types of adoption

Part 2: Who are the children and youth in care?

Adoption from foster care is centred on finding the right family for each child, not finding a child for a family. This video explores:

Why children and youth come into government care
When adoption may be chosen
Who BC’s waiting children and youth are
Common support and placement needs
How prospective parents can prepare
The needs of children and youth at different ages

Part 3: The adoption process and what to expect

The third video walks through the main steps involved in adopting from BC foster care, including:

Completing the Introduction to Adoption and Permanency course
Creating an Adopt BC Kids profile and submitting an application
Participating in a pre-screening interview
Enrolling in the Learning for Adoption and Permanency (LEAP) course
Being assigned a social worker in your community
Completing the homestudy process
Matching with a child or youth
Preparing for and completing the transition process

Part 4: Post-adoption support

Support remains important after an adoption is finalized. The final video introduces resources and programs that may be available to adoptive families, including:
