As a young person in government care in BC, you have rights. The Child, Family and Community Service Act has a special section that explains and protects your rights. This is in Part 4, Sections 70-71.

Symbolizing human rights: A gavel surrounded by colorful figurines.

The Act can be confusing. The Representative for Children and Youth’s website has a summary of your rights that’s really easy to understand. Check it out here.

The Federation of BC Youth in Care Network also has a great resource on rights: Your Life, Your Rights.

If you have questions about your rights, talk to your social worker! If you feel like you are being treated unfairly, if you’re having a hard time speaking up for your rights, or if you think you’re not being heard, The Rep’s office can help. Get help here.
