Transitioning can be different for every person. For my brother and I it was a different experience for the both of us…

I was not completely ready for the transition and had run away for a few days to, in a way, help clear my mind. My brother on the other hand went easily. Once we were at the house everything went well. The first summer went really well; we had lots of fun and had got to know each other well. Once school started there were a few challenges.

We had a lot of arguments and some disagreements but we didn’t give up on each other. We had challenges with boundaries, rules, and respect. I hadn’t been used to following many rules and had a hard time getting used to the idea of doing so.

Going to the Speak-Out Youth Group helped a lot because there were other teens that had some of the same problems I had. After a while we had figured some things out and had worked with each other to make rules that worked for the whole family.

Throughout the time we’ve been with them there have been ups and downs but the important thing is to never give up on each other. We’ve learned to love and appreciate one another and are at a good place.

Six tips for transitioning into a new home

  1. Everyone handles situations differently, so it’s important to give each other time and space when needed.
  2. Talk to someone for needed advice.
  3. Stay open minded.
  4. Spend lots of time with the future parents/kids to get to know them well.
  5. Let the other person know how you feel.
  6. Most of all don’t give up and keep trying!
