As a young person in government care in BC, you have rights. The Child, Family and Community Service Act has a special section that explains and protects your rights. This is in Part 4, Sections 70-71.

Symbolizing human rights: A gavel surrounded by colorful figurines.

The Act can be confusing. The Representative for Children and Youth’s website has a summary of your rights that’s really easy to understand.

The Federation of BC Youth in Care Network also has a great resource on rights: Your Life, Your Rights.

If you have questions about your rights, talk to your social worker! If you feel like you are being treated unfairly, if you’re having a hard time speaking up for your rights, or if you think you’re not being heard, The Rep’s office can help. You can visit the Representative for Children and Youth website for support.
